Although slightly bitter in taste, calendula tea is one of the remedies used in folk medicine due to its healing properties. Meanwhile, you can find extracts in oils, ointments, and tinctures.
Here are seven health benefits of calendula tea and extract.
1. Rich in Antioxidants
Antioxidants are beneficial compounds that can neutralize the harmful effects of oxidative stress in the body.
Meanwhile, calendula extract contains several powerful antioxidants, including triterpenes, flavonoids, polyphenols, and carotenoids.
In addition, it also provides a floral anti-inflammatory compound such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα). While inflammation is a normal response of the body, chronic inflammation is associated with a variety of conditions, including obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes.

In a 12-week study of 57 people, 72% of those treated with calendula extract experienced complete healing of leg vein ulcers, compared with 32% in the control group.

3. May Help Remove Certain Cancer Cells
The antioxidant content of calendula also has an antitumor effect.
Test-tube studies show that the antioxidant flavonoids and triterpenes of calendula may fight leukemia, melanoma, colon and pancreatic cancer.
Meanwhile, there are studies showing that the extract activates a protein that kills cancer cells while blocking other proteins that would otherwise prevent cell death.
However, human studies are lacking. Calendula tea or other calendula products should not be used to treat cancer.
Calendula extract is known for its antifungal and antimicrobial properties. In particular, marigold flower oil has been shown to be effective against 23 types of Candida yeast, a common fungus that can cause infections in the mouth, vagina, and skin.
In addition, another test-tube study found that marigold extract inhibited the growth of leishmaniasis, the parasite responsible for leishmaniasis, a disease that can cause skin lesions or affect internal organs such as the spleen, liver, and bone marrow.

In a 6-month study of 240 people with gingivitis, those who took calendula mouthwash had a 46 percent reduction in inflammation compared to 35 percent in the control group.
In addition, a test-tube study showed that calendula-based mouthwash was able to reduce the number of microorganisms in sutures used for tooth extractions.
Studies attribute this effect to the strong anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties of calendula.
In addition, gargling with a decoction of calendula relieves sore throats, although evidence has not been confirmed.

Calendula extract is widely used in cosmetics, including creams and ointments.
Both test-tube and human studies have shown that calendula extract can increase skin hydration and stimulate skin firmness and elasticity, thus slowing down the signs of aging. These benefits are made possible by the content of antioxidants, which can reduce skin damage caused by oxidative stress.
